PETR STROUHAL / BIO

About my work

In my work, I use a lot of used materials, both industrial and consumer products. After cutting them up, I use the parts that were not intended for the end user to see. From these parts, I reassemble new objects and arrange them into simple compositions. I photograph the compositions or individual parts, and I move or rotate them in space during the photographic process, thereby changing their shapes and leading to their deformations. For the process, I use a large-format or mid-format camera with a specially adapted office scanner (scanner camera). This modified device allows for sequential scanning of lines, and I can move the subject on various planes (various shifts, rotation, extension, bending, shortening, etc.). The end result depends on the speed of the scanner sensor and the movements of the sensed objects that are assisted by a variety of guiding and fixing devices. The whole process is recorded digitally, and the result is one static image that is not modified in post production.

Bio

Czech, based in Prague, Czech Republic

After studying painting and multimedia (2007), Petr Strouhal has been devoted to experimenting with photographic images and producing his own photographic equipment (2014). In his earlier work, it is often possible to trace a combination of photographs and drawings, such as projections of drawings directly on photographic compositions (2012). An important aspect of Strouhal‘s current work concerns with image manipulation without the use of graphics programs: "It still deals with traditional analog photography, even though it is recorded digitally.“ His latest photographs are closer to film and animation in procedure. The scanning technology, which he has been mastering for the last few years, is based on a progressive scan of composition line by line. This allows Strouhal to apply possibilities to edit, displace and deform, while simultaneously hiding the alterations. From a procedural point of view, we could call his approach animation. The result, however, is a still im age based on trick illusion.
